Grass Burning in Russia

Every spring in Russia people massively burn the last year’s dry grass… Such burnings are one of the main causes of forest fires and especially peatland fires. They destruct ecosystems and may damage houses, power lines and even people by themselves.

Why Russians still burn the grass? It is the heritage of Soviet times when collective farms were obliged to burn grass in all fields to increase the soil fertility by destroying seeds of wild grasses… Unfortunately, modern researches show the opposite. Soils became worse… animals, insects and birds may be damaged. Burnings may cause real fires that may destroy huge areas. But many agricultural organizations that are on the verge of survival still use this method as the cheapest way of cleaning fields or even recycling waste…
